I’m constantly told how rare my children’s situations are, but honestly how rare is rare?
When we first started out on this food allergy journey five years ago I was told if my son had a dairy allergy he would outgrow it before one! Well when he didn’t they told me he would outgrow it by five. I was told by the time he went off to Kindergarten we wouldn’t be dealing with this issue. Guess what, he is five and he is going off to Kindergarten in the fall with a Dairy allergy that is off the charts!
This brings me to my daughter. He situation is very rare I’ve been told. Her testing positive to soy, dairy, oats, and reacting but now testing negative to corn, wheat, peanuts and beef is not a common thing at all.
I started to research and found that in fact it’s not as rare as people think. The common foods that get the most attention are your peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish allergies because they are least likely to outgrow and the most fatal. People have laughed when I told them my son needs to carry an Epi Pen for Dairy. They confuse it for lactose intolerant and brush it off. I have been asked what am I doing that is causing my daughter to have so many allergies? Truth is, I’m not doing anything to cause them, she was born with them. WHY? I have no clue but hopefully she will outgrow them!
The problem is Food Allergy Awareness is pushed aside for other diseases, conditions, illnesses and that is why people think its so rare. In fact, even in the medical field it isn’t as well known as it should be. Doctors understand food allergies but not to the extent that my children have them. Our doctor was shocked when I showed him a picture of my son’s arm from milk touching it. His skin bubbles up from a drop of milk, that is definitely not lactose intolerant!
So it may not be as common to have as many allergies as my daughter does, or have a dairy allergy as severe as my sons, but it’s not as rare as you may think!
